MAMA ALINAH MARUMO

Ikimiseng Crèche and Pre-school

Mama Alinah Marumo, who founded Ikemiseng in 1989, provides nurturing on the outskirts of Welkom, Free State. Alinah cares for close to 100 children from new-born to six years of age. Her motto is: “Let them stand for themselves to face the future”. But Mama Alinah’s commitment to education does not end there. She noticed the need for job creation in her area and rolled up her sleeves to assist her community. She provides skills training to members of her community in an effort to help them uplift themselves. She created vegetable gardens and taught the community about it too so that they can become self-reliant. Mama Alinah prides herself on the expansion of her income-generating projects including a bakery which sells products to the community. She also hands out bread to needy households on a weekly basis. Her sewing project provides members with access and training to create sellable items and thus minimise the unemployment rate.
