MAMA LUCIA COBOKANA
Fundisisizwe Development Project
Growing up in the Transkei, the only thing Mama Lucia ever heard was that she wouldn’t amount to much. She decided to prove all the naysayers wrong, and enrolled at UNISA, and qualified as a social worker. When she came to Joburg in 1995, she saw too many unattended children and was spurred into action. Mama Lucia, who has three kids of her own and firmly believes that no child should be deprived of education and that all women must be able to depend on themselves. This belief and the situation in the CBD led her to start Fundisisizwe Development Project in 2002. Here she provided basic life skills and cared to 350 children aged 1 to 21. She also managed a crèche with 35 little ones and an outreach programme which assists 85 members.
