MAMA MIRRIAM MAKAMU
Sipho & Mary’s Bakery
Mama Mirriam was forced to start generating an income after her husband lost his job as a professional builder and was unable to find a new one. She started with one recipe and baking late into the night using a neighbours oven to peddle her wares early the following morning at the taxi ranks. She is the second Enterprise Development Project Mama appointed.
From these humble beginnings, they eventually started Sipho & Mary Bakery in the heart of Thembisa in 2008. Despite all the challenges she faced, one of which was her lack of experience, her hard work, persistence, and dedication paid off, and her business continues to grow steadily. Today, they are a well-known bakery within the community, and the demand for their products keep increasing. Mama Mirriam joined the Clover Mama Afrika project in March 2015 and currently employs 34 permanent and five casual members.
