MAMA PUMLA GIGI

Ubuhle Babantwana Care Cente

Mama Pumla Gigi saw children as young as three years old going to school on an empty stomach, and with scant resources, she opened her shack to the children of unemployed parents. Soon, she was looking after more than 100 children at her centre, living her motto: “Let the children come to me.” Despite facing many personal challenges, her warm and caring personality led her to make do with what little she had.

She ensured that all children in her care were educated, fed, and entertained. Despite charging a small fee to keep the doors open, Mama Pumla never turned a parent away who couldn’t afford it.
